Ebi Soda – red in tokyo feat. Jianbo
Ebi Soda team up with rapper Jianbo for “red in tokyo”, a glitchy bruiser that cuts through the noise. Born from a 45-minute jam session at 3am, the track finds its groove in 16 bars of “wild brilliance”: snarling guitars, drill-inflected drums, and Hari-lee Evan’s bassline tweaked to sound like a Japanese Koto.
Jianbo’s distorted flows tell the story of a Tokyo nightclub brawl that left him “seeing red” after watching Black Country, New Road’s Shibuya show. The band calls it “punk jazz drill”, which feels right when you hear those ferocious vocals cut through the sludgy rhythms. What makes this collaboration even better is the backstory – Ebi Soda discovered Jianbo’s “Mongkok Madness” in 2022, only to find out he’d caught their scrappy Camberwell gig back in 2019.
“red in tokyo” previews their upcoming album “frank dean and andrew”, recorded during farmhouse sessions. It’s part of Ebi Soda’s new path for UK jazz, following singles like “bamboo” and “when pluto was a planet and everything was cool”.
